General Information

Project Overview

The project to improve the section of Sunrise Drive from Craycroft Road to Kolb Road is included in the Pima County Transportation Bond program approved by voters in 1997. Planning and preliminary engineering began in 2000, however the project was placed on hold in 2001 due to funding availability.

In 2005, improvements to the Sunrise Drive/Craycroft Road intersection were designed and are currently being constructed with the Craycroft Road widening project. In 2006, planning and preliminary engineering for the remaining 2-mile section of Sunrise Drive resumed, however the roadway now is designated a scenic route and falls under Pima County’s Environmentally Sensitive Roadway Design Guidelines. As such, widening of the roadway needs to be accomplished with the intent of minimizing the impact on the existing slopes, views, and vegetation, while still improving the capacity and safety of the roadway for drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists.

The planning and preliminary engineering phase of the project is scheduled to be completed in Fall 2007 followed by final design which is scheduled for completion in Fall 2008. Construction would tentatively begin in late 2008.
