Project Description
This project enhances pedestrian and
bicycle access north and south across the Rillito River between Fort
Lowell Road and River Road. The existing
roadway will be widened to include paved shoulders, vertical curb,
and sidewalks to provide much-needed pedestrian improvements along
the corridor.
Once the roadway has been widened, the entire roadway may be overlaid
with a rubberized asphalt surface.
Project Limits
• Fort Lowell Road
to the Rillito River
Proposed Roadway Typical Section
• Six-foot
paved shoulder (one in each direction).
• Eleven-foot travel
lane (one in each direction).
• Five-foot sidewalks
located directly behind curb on both sides of road.
Speed Limit
• The
speed limit will be reduced from 35 mph to 30 mph to enhance
pedestrian and bicycle
safety.
Lighting
• Pedestrian-level
lighting (bollard-style) will be added along the sidewalk.
• Lighting
will be added to the railing along the bridge crossing the Rillito
River.
Bridge Improvements
• Railing
will be upgraded to enhance pedestrian safety.
• The bridge
itself will not be improved.
• Currently
evaluating an overlay of the existing bridge with a rubberized
asphalt surface.
Construction Timing
• Construction
will not begin until after the new Alvernon Way project has been
opened to
traffic over the Rillito River.
• Construction
duration is approximately 2-3 months.
